Nearly $600,000 in Grants Distributed In Eastern Connecticut

The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut is pleased to announce it has recently awarded nearly $600,000 in grants to almost 100 nonprofits in its initial grant cycles of the year. These grants are designed to meet basic needs, strengthen families, foster youth development, create educational opportunities, provide access to cultural resource and address local environmental issues. Among the largest recipients are the New London Homeless Hospitality Center and its collaboration with Connecticut Legal Services to end homelessness. The Garde Arts Center, OIC and New London Youth Affairs were also among the major grantees for their educational and family strengthening programs.

The foundation’s Windham area Women & Girls Fund also made $22,000 in grants to organizations that improve the lives of women and girls in Windham County. Awards ranged from $3,500 to the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry for a domestic violence prevention program to $400 to the Audubon Society for science camperships for girls.

Community Foundation President, Alice Fitzpatrick said, “All of these grants are made possible by charitable people in eastern Connecticut – past and present - and their 325 permanent funds set up as a way to give back to the community.” Fitzpatrick also noted that the Community Foundation takes a long term investment strategy with its endowment which enjoyed a 12% return for 2010. She said, “Our prudent spending policy through economic ups and downs allows us to grow and be a reliable force for good for the region.”

Two committees made up of community volunteers were involved in making these distributions: the General Grants Committee chaired by Valerie Grimm of Noank and the Windham Area Women & Girls Fund Committee, co-chaired by Mary Weinland of Mansfield Center, Sandy Hale of Windham and June Krisch of Mansfield.

The foundation expects to give out a total of $2 million in 2011 through its scholarship awards, Norwich area youth grants and P.A.W. (People for Animals & Wildlife) grants later this spring, along with distributions from its Norwich and Southeast area Women & Girls Funds in the fall.

The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut promotes local giving and makes community strengthening grants and scholarships in 42 towns in New London, Windham and Tolland Counties. For more information, visit us at www.cfect.org or contact Jennifer O’Brien, 860-442-3572, JennOB@cfect.org.
