The Community Foundation's commitment to helping women of all ages in Eastern Connecticut comes to life this month when our Northeast and Windham women and girls funds host two exciting events.

The Sassy Chapeau Hat Show, the crowning fundraiser and outreach event of the Northeast Women & Girls Fund season, takes place Thursday, May 18, at a new venue, The Mansion at Bald Hill in Woodstock.

Spectacular men's and women's hat fashions by Salmagundi of Boston will be modeled by young women from local high schools and civic organizations while honoring a special woman in their lives. The husband and wife team of Jessen Fitzpatrick and Andria Rapagnola, proprietors of Salmagundi, have partnered with the Northeast Women & Girls Fund on this event since it began in 2013.

The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and entertainment. The show starts at 6:30 p.m

The evening will feature entertainment by artists Elizabeth Silvia and Faith Bessette, winners of New England’s Got Talent; and music by Tina Lajoie and Wolff Productions. Sen. Mae Flexer will be the guest speaker Linda Colangelo will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.

Tickets are $20 and are available at any branch of event Platinum Sponsor Putnam Bank. Other event sponsors include Wheelabrator Putnam, Christopher Heights Assisted Living, The Byrnes Agency, Brooklyn Cares, Rogers Corporation, Bank Hometown, The Northeastern CT Chamber of Commerce, Stonebridge Press & Village Newspapers, and WINY Radio.

Finding Hope: A Celebration of Women and Girls, the annual breakfast gathering of the Windham Women & Girls Fund, takes place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 19, at Eastern Connecticut State University's Student Center, in the Betty Tipton Room.

Those gathered will enjoy breakfast while hearing this year’s guest speaker, Kathy Wyatt, who discovered the healing power of writing when she was incarcerated for eight and a half years at the York Correctional Institution in East Lyme. There she met and studied with acclaimed Eastern Connecticut author Wally Lamb, who will be on hand to introduce Wyatt at the event. Wyatt’s work is included in Lamb’s collection, “I’ll Fly Away.” The book will be available for purchase and signing by Wyatt and Lamb.

The event is a celebration of the $27,095 in grants awarded last fall by the Windham Area Women & Girls Fund. Tickets are $35 per person. RSVP by May 10 by emailing Lillian Rhodes or calling her at (877) 442-3572.

Proceeds from each event will benefit the individual funds - which make awards through a competitive grants process - to support programs that empower women and girls and provide resources necessary to overcome the challenges in their lives.
